Guardians of Integrity: Inside the World of Compliance Officers
Saturday Nov 04, 2023
Saturday Nov 04, 2023
In this episode we talk about Ethics and Compliance Officers. We had a chance to sit down and talk with Pamela Koppelmann about her career as a compliance officer. Pam is the Director of Compliance and Policy Review at Norwich University, a private Senior Military College in Northfield, Vermont. Prior to joining Norwich, she served 21 years on active duty in the United States Army. Pam was a logistics officer by trade but had the pleasure of serving as an Inspector General two times in her career which is where she discovered her true calling in life—as a compliance officer. Her views on compliance aren’t just about following the rules for the sake of following the rules; she strives to make it fun and engaging, while focusing on the importance of compliance and the positive impacts such as workplace culture, morale and overall well being of the employees and organization. Please post your pictures and stories of how you are celebrating compliance awareness week on our facebook page here ==> https://www.facebook.com/timstatingtheobvious
If you don't know a compliance officer is responsible for ensuring that an organization or business complies with all relevant laws, regulations, and internal policies. Their job involves monitoring and assessing the company's operations to identify and mitigate risks related to legal and regulatory compliance. Compliance officers also develop and implement compliance programs, train employees on compliance matters, conduct audits, and report any violations or discrepancies to the appropriate authorities. They play a crucial role in maintaining the integrity and reputation of the organization by preventing legal and ethical issues.

Time Management Hacks Don’t Work!
Friday Sep 29, 2023
Friday Sep 29, 2023
In this episode we dive into the topic of Time Management. Time management hacks are often hailed as the silver bullet for enhancing productivity, promising to make our lives more efficient and effective. However, it's essential to recognize that these hacks are not a one-size-fits-all solution. They come with various caveats and limitations that can hinder their effectiveness for some individuals.
First and foremost, one of the key challenges with time management hacks is that they lack universality. What works wonders for one person might prove utterly ineffective for another. This discrepancy arises from the fact that everyone possesses unique work styles, preferences, and cognitive capabilities. Our ability to maintain focus on a task, for instance, varies significantly from person to person.

A Call to Empathy: Understanding Stress and Burnout
Friday Sep 15, 2023
Friday Sep 15, 2023
In this episode, we dive deep into the often misunderstood world of stress and burnout faced by Gen Z and Millennials. Despite misconceptions that these generations have it easy, research shows a significant portion of them grapple with persistent stress and anxiety. Deloitte Research found that even before the pandemic, these young adults were already dealing with high levels of mental stress. We explore various mental health opportunities offered by employers, such as vacation time, regular well-being check-ins with managers, support from senior leaders, stress reduction resources, mental health apps, meeting-free days, and access to counseling or therapy. While Millennials tend to rely on vacation time, Gen Z takes advantage of the full range of options available. The discussion also delves into the dual caregiving responsibilities that many Gen Z and Millennials face, caring for both children and aging parents or relatives. We sheds light on the real challenges faced by Gen Z and Millennials, challenges that are often dismissed or misunderstood. It calls for empathy, understanding, and open communication as essential tools to combat stress and burnout and create a more supportive work environment for these generations.

The Evolving Work Identity
Friday Sep 01, 2023
Friday Sep 01, 2023
Before we dive into today's topic, a quick shoutout to my website, timstatingtheobvious.com. On there, you'll find insights into the essence of our show, a blog updated bi-weekly, and a curated reading list for professionals. Now, let's shift gears to the spotlight of this episode: the mindset of Gen Z and Millennials towards work and life.
In this discussion, we explore how these generations perceive work as a fundamental part of their identity, while simultaneously striving for equilibrium. According to a report, their identity hinges on several factors, including the importance of friends and family, work, hobbies, music, and exercise. With work being their second priority, it's evident that they're pursuing a work-life balance.
Nonetheless, this generation is admired for their ability to juggle numerous priorities, but there's a concern about their depth of expertise. The focus is on breadth rather than depth, except for a subset excelling in their careers. Understanding this dynamic is vital for both job retention and recruitment.
Notably, Gen Z and Millennials admire qualities that align with their pursuit of work-life balance. Traits like maintaining positivity, autonomy, learning new skills, embracing change, and a genuine passion for work are highly valued. However, their pessimistic outlook pertains to economic conditions impacting their life-work equilibrium.
Reducing after-hours work messages and tasks is crucial to fostering healthier work environments. While certain executives require constant coordination, this practice doesn't have to trickle down. Ensuring open communication about response expectations contributes to reduced stress levels.
Remember, fostering collaboration and empathy yields the best results. Rather than labeling these generations as problematic, let's work together to harness their potential and pave the way for a harmonious integration into the workforce.

Cracking the Code to Financial Independence: Gen Z and Millennials Unite!
Friday Aug 18, 2023
Friday Aug 18, 2023
In our previous episode, we delved into the 2023 Deloitte Gen Z and Millennial Survey Report, which unveiled these generations' expectations from businesses. Today, we're shifting our focus to explore their financial concerns, as revealed by the same report.
Interestingly, both Gen Z and Millennials share a common concern: the escalating cost of living. However, their priorities begin to diverge here. Gen Z is particularly worried about unemployment, climate change, the mental health of their generation, and personal safety issues. On the other hand, Millennials emphasize climate change, unemployment, healthcare and disease prevention, and personal safety.
A remarkable revelation is that Gen Z displays a relatively more optimistic outlook regarding their financial futures compared to their Millennial counterparts. Paradoxically, over half of both Gen Z and Millennials find themselves living paycheck to paycheck, marking an increase since the 2022 study. This surge can be attributed to the record-breaking inflation rates observed over the past four decades. Additionally, the growth of part-time employment stems from businesses adapting to higher wage and benefit costs, leading to a rise in part-time workforce. It's important to note that this trend isn't necessarily a sign of disengagement; rather, people are searching for better-paying opportunities.
In this context, Employee Engagement emerges as a significant factor. Finding a middle ground concerning wages, benefits, and job satisfaction could potentially extend the tenure of Gen Z and Millennials within organizations. The demand for higher wages, driven by the surge in inflation, prompts these generations to seek supplemental income streams. Leveraging social media platforms, they engage in online commerce, offering products and services or participating in activities such as food delivery and ride-sharing. Many become Uber, Lyft, or Uber Eats drivers, illustrating diverse motivations ranging from monetary gains to the monetization of hobbies. Notably, 46% of Gen Z and 37% of Millennials have embraced additional part-time or full-time jobs alongside their primary employment, indicating a 3% rise for Gen Z and a 4% increase for Millennials since the previous year.
In a larger context, as the largest generation in the workforce approaches retirement, they're also grappling with the caregiving responsibilities that come with aging relatives. A heartening trend emerges – this generation is choosing to personally care for their elderly family members, reflecting their values and compassion.
Amidst the backdrop of rising inflation, the burden of caregiving, and the pursuit of supplementary income, Gen Z and Millennials are adapting their lifestyles. This adaptation includes an increase in second-hand clothing stores, a shift towards public transportation to save on gas and car expenses, and alterations in dietary habits. Given the financial uncertainties they face, these generations find planning for their futures an arduous task.
