In this episode of Tim Stating the Obvious, we tackle one of the most urgent leadership issues of our time: the growing mental health crisis among today’s youth and young professionals. Based on Jonathan Haidt’s provocative book, The Anxious Generation, we break down how smartphones and social media rewired childhood, stunted emotional resilience, and left a generation more anxious, less connected, and struggling in the workplace.
But here’s the catch—this isn’t just a parenting problem. It’s a leadership challenge. As Gen Z enters the workforce, their struggles with screen addiction, face-to-face discomfort, and emotional fragility show up in team dynamics, productivity, and culture. If you want to lead effectively in the modern age, you’ve got to understand what’s happening beneath the surface.
We’ll unpack Haidt’s core recommendations—like limiting screen time, encouraging unstructured outdoor play, and promoting real-world challenges—and translate them into actionable leadership strategies. From building grit in your team to designing environments that foster emotional maturity and deep work, this episode shows you how to lead with empathy, awareness, and intention.
Whether you're a CEO, educator, coach, or parent-turned-manager, this episode will challenge you to rethink how you support growth and resilience in the people you lead.
Key Topics:1. Why Gen Z is struggling—and how that affects your workplace2. Haidt’s “rewiring” theory of adolescence and tech3. How to develop grit without micromanaging4. The case for real-world collaboration and deep work5. Leadership strategies that build resilience, not fragility

Subconscious Secrets: Are YOU Being Held Back?
Friday Apr 18, 2025
Friday Apr 18, 2025
In this insightful episode, we dive deep into the differences between your brain and your mind. The brain, much like computer hardware, is the physical organ responsible for transmitting and receiving thought frequencies. Meanwhile, your mind acts as the operating system—an intangible force made up of conscious and subconscious components, directing your brain's actions.
Your subconscious mind operates quietly beneath your conscious awareness, shaping your thoughts, emotions, habits, and behaviors. Through intentional practices like repetition, auto-suggestion, and visualization, you can program your subconscious mind to attract the opportunities and resources needed to fulfill your dreams. Speaking positively and cultivating supportive environments are essential, as your subconscious internalizes your words and surroundings.
Think of your brain as a radio—constantly tuning into frequencies that align with your thoughts. Positive thinking will draw positive outcomes, while negative thoughts inevitably lead to negative experiences. Training your mind to view situations positively, regardless of immediate circumstances, shapes your personal beliefs and the reality you experience.
Thanks to neuroplasticity, your brain is always capable of forming new connections based on repeated thoughts and actions. Visualization—mentally rehearsing desired outcomes—strengthens these neural pathways and boosts performance. Amplifying visualization with powerful emotions further anchors your core values and goals. Creating vision boards is another practical way to keep your dreams front and center.

I also reviewed Sheryl Green’s book, “You Had Me at No.” It tackles the challenges of setting boundaries. The book explains why it’s hard and why it’s important for your well-being. It’s filled with humor, examples, and strategies. Quick note: this review isn’t sponsored. It’s my honest take after reading the book and interviewing Cheryl.
Sheryl Green breaks boundaries into six key areas: material (time, possessions, money), emotional (feelings), mental (thoughts), physical (space, body), sexual (intimacy), and time-based. The book says exhaustion often comes from letting people cross these lines. I can stop that, starting today.

Deal With a Bad Boss: Actionable Advice For Success
Friday Apr 04, 2025
Friday Apr 04, 2025
This episode features a conversation with Eric Charran, author of “Have You Ever Had a Boss That...,” discussing workplace dysfunction and strategies for thriving in challenging environments. The discussion centers around identifying common causes of dysfunction, understanding different manager archetypes, and turning negative experiences into opportunities for personal and professional growth.
Eric and I begin by exploring the root causes of workplace dysfunction, which often stem from a lack of leadership training and the inheritance of outdated management styles. Leaders may adopt unhelpful behaviors due to a lack of proper training or by mimicking ineffective approaches they’ve observed in the past. The key is to understand that leaders have different toolboxes, and they may not have the right tools or emotional intelligence for organizational leadership.
Charran categorizes different managers into unique archetypes, each with distinct behaviors and impacts on their teams.
To manage these archetypes, Eric advocates for “managing upwards” by empathizing with the manager’s motivations and challenges.
Let's dive right in!

Stuck in Life? This Mastermind Secret Will Shock You!
Friday Mar 21, 2025
Friday Mar 21, 2025
Defining a personal and professional vision is vital for providing direction and purpose in life. A personal vision encompasses the big picture of the life you want to live, focusing on values, relationships, health, and legacy. A professional vision involves setting clear career goals, defining achievements, and outlining leadership roles you want to pursue. Setting a vision helps in moving intentionally towards goals and avoiding life’s distractions.
The mastermind mentality involves intentionally surrounding yourself with individuals who challenge, sharpen, and support your growth. It recognizes that success is not a solitary endeavor, emphasizing the importance of mutually beneficial relationships. Drawing from Proverbs 27:17, the concept of “iron sharpens iron” illustrates that friends should help bring out the best in each other, even through potentially painful processes. This involves creating a circle of like-minded individuals committed to personal and professional advancement.
Creating a mastermind group involves finding individuals with shared objectives and a commitment to mutual success. It is important to reevaluate your circle if it does not align with these principles. The goal is to foster an environment where everyone contributes to leveling up together. Accountability, diverse perspectives, and emotional support are key benefits of a mastermind group, helping members stay on track and overcome challenges.
I will highlight the importance of vision as the “why” and the mastermind mentality as the “how” in achieving success. Success is rarely achieved in isolation but rather through collaboration and mutual support. Sharing your vision with others and building a supportive circle can significantly accelerate progress. Moreover, remember, if you want to achieve your vision, your circle must be a place that helps you grow.

Book Review: The Six Pillars of Effective Leadership
Friday Mar 14, 2025
Friday Mar 14, 2025
The Tim Stating the Obvious podcast delivers practical leadership insights for everyday life, reinforcing the idea that great leadership is a right, not a privilege. It simplifies complex leadership concepts into accessible, actionable guidance that can be applied in various settings.
Jim Carlough’s Six Pillars of Effective Leadership serves as a practical roadmap for leadership growth, designed for anyone looking to develop as a leader—whether or not they hold a formal management role. Rooted in real-world experience, the book highlights six essential pillars: integrity, focus, compassion, stability, empathy, and humor. These core principles provide a solid foundation for cultivating well-rounded leadership skills across different environments.
Leadership is framed as a matter of influence rather than authority, shifting the focus from titles to meaningful relationships. Traits like integrity and empathy are not just inherent qualities but skills that require deliberate practice. Leadership is an ongoing journey, not a final destination, emphasizing the importance of continuous growth, mentorship, and lifelong learning.
